The sun came out for us this week in Forest School and we made some magic mud paint! We collected a small amount of mud and then we needed to add bicarbonate of soda. The children had a good think about what it could be before we told them. One child commented ‘It’s washing powder’ Another child said ‘ It’s snow.’ We discussed what it was and then put some in our bowl. The children then explored what happened to their mud as they added and mixed various colours of powder paint. Finally for the magic, we poured in a little vinegar and watched what happened. ‘It’s exploding’ said one child. ‘It’s fizzing’ said another. Many of the children wanted to repeat the reaction and others decided to paint with their magic mud paint. There were lots of fantastic paintings, from an Indian elephant with his cousin to a monster.
